Europol Dismantles $540M Crypto Fraud Network Spanning Multiple Countries
Spanish authorities, with international support from Europol and law enforcement agencies in Estonia, France, and the United States, have dismantled a sophisticated cryptocurrency fraud operation. The network allegedly laundered €460 million ($540 million) stolen from over 5,000 victims worldwide through fake investment schemes.
Five arrests were made across Madrid and the Canary Islands on June 25th, accompanied by targeted searches. Europol's financial crime team provided operational support since 2023, deploying crypto specialists to assist local investigators during the takedown.
The criminal organization operated a global sales structure, using phone calls, emails, and social media to promote fraudulent crypto investment opportunities. Victims were persuaded to transfer funds through traditional banking channels and cash withdrawals before the funds entered the crypto ecosystem.
